Our Services

Serving Businesses

Notwithstanding the critical importance of maintaining strong HR and compliance practices, as a restaurateur, bar owner, winemaker, food distributor, franchisee, or other small- to medium-sized business owner, we recognize it isn’t always feasible to employ full-time HR and compliance staff. That’s okay! We can work with you to provide “fractionalized” HR and compliance services that are customized to meet the unique needs of your business. Maybe you have nuanced employee management issues and a strong need for extensive ongoing long-term consult and HR back-office support—no problem! Or maybe you just need help here and there with things like developing a legally-compliant handbook, or job descriptions—no problem! Please read on to see how we can be of help to you.

Serving Individuals

We have and can draw from decades of executive-level HR experience within a number of industries in both the private and public sectors. We are happy to assist you with building compelling resumes and with interview prep, and or with customized help navigating career changes or any employment challenges.

How we Consult

We’re sure you’re quite busy! And to this end, we are happy to work with you in myriad ways. We start with a free phone consultation during which we can explore your unique needs. From there, we are poised to work with you in-person as may be needed (see our service area below), and or remotely via phone, email, and video conferencing. For businesses, we can provide monthly subscription services that put us at your ready, and that are at a fraction of the cost of employing a full-time HR/compliance person, or we can offer “ala carte services” for specific needs—maybe you just need a legally-compliant employee handbook drafted and reviewed once per year. Likewise for individuals, we can provide short- or long-term professional consult, or we can provide one-time services like resume writing.

Our Service Area

Ryan McMackin is located in Oregon, and Chloe McMackin is located in Washington. We can typically meet in-person as may be needed within the coastal regions to the I-5 corridor spanning from Eugene, Oregon, to Seattle, Washington, and we can serve the entire Pacific Northwest and beyond with fulsome services via phone, email, and video conferencing.

Our Services

Customized HR and compliance help for business owners and management:

We can work with you to understand the unique challenges you are facing, and then develop quick and effective strategies and work products that may include any of the services noted below.

Navigating complex employee relations matters and assessing work culture:

Employee relations matters are typically some of the most nuanced and consequential that employers face. We can help you assess your work culture, navigate “sticky” issues (including BOLI/EEOC/NLRB matters, lawsuits, etc.), and ultimately devise meaningful strategies that support growth, happiness, and balance within your workplace.

Helping with talent acquisition/retention, and performance management:

We can help you develop effective recruiting methods and realistic retention strategies to increase tenure and lower attrition. Frequent employee turnover can be culturally disruptive, and the cost of repeatedly having to find and train fresh staff is a significant expense vacuum. Further, we can help you develop performance review and employee development platforms that are right-sized to your business (highly advisable to have), and we can advise on any “difficult employee performance” matters, and help with write-up documentation, etc.

Providing customized, legally-compliant employee handbooks and job descriptions:

We can provide you a customized, robust employee handbook that addresses your desired internal policy and that captures all necessary legal, jurisdictional, and labor laws pursuant to the Fed and the State. It is highly advisable that all businesses with employees have and provide legally-vetted employee handbooks that are regularly updated, and for which employees regularly sign acknowledgements. We can also create and periodically review and revise comprehensive job descriptions that offer your employees necessary clarity, protect you as an employer, and that can be used for establishing scope, duties, and modified-duty provisions if there are L&I/Work-Comp claims.

Building strategic compensation strategies that support employee retention:

Compensation and employee time-management practices can be onerous, and there are many easy “pitfalls.” We can help you develop a compensation structure that is Fair Pay Act compliant, that supports morale and specific retention strategies, all while balancing expense control.

Navigating benefits, P&C, and GL insurances, and Work Comp and L&I claims:

Insurance and risk management matters can be complex, and the jargon confusing. We have good expertise in this area, contacts with many reputable brokers, and we can help you navigate the terrain and help you negotiate benefits, property and casualty, employment practice liability (EPL), and general liability insurances. Further, we can assist with L&I/Work-Comp matters—principally developing strategies to help avoid claims and to lower the business experience factor (which affects costs) and ensuring job descriptions and the employee handbook support ‘modified work’ should there be claims.

Labor Law compliance and avoiding common employment practice pitfalls:

Interpreting Labor Law can be confusing to say the least, and there are often local laws and or acts that are put into effect and or modified without much direction from governing entities. We can help you assess your compliance with any and all applicable labor laws, acts, and ordinances, and help you with the avoidance of common legal pitfalls. We can also assist you with any complex employment relations matters or complaints that have or could have litigation, EEOC, NRLB, or BOLI implications or ramifications.

Supporting OLCC/MAST, OSHA, HACCP, and Health Authority compliance:

We can help you with OLCC/MAST/Food-Handlers compliance, including a customized management service in which we track your employees’ certifications and expirations, and your servers’ alcohol incident logs. We can also help with OSHA compliance and avoiding OSHA claims, maintaining annual OSHA 300 logs, developing/maintaining HACCP logs/records, and cooperating with the Health Authority, and other similar governing agencies.

For Jobseekers – Building customized, effective resumes, and professional coaching:

We can work with you to hear your story and your unique career aspirations. And from there we can design and build you compelling resumes and cover letters that appeal both to humans and Applicant Tracking Systems (ATSs). We can also help you with interview prep and provide you meaningful consultation on navigating career changes or any employment challenges you may have.
